Indigo Unified Communications supplies rugged phones and tablets to construction, renewables and other field teams across Scotland, from our offices in Glasgow and Livingston. Devices are built to survive dust, water and drops, run on EE, O2 or Vodafone (chosen by a coverage check at your sites), and arrive set up in Microsoft Intune, so a lost phone can be locked or wiped remotely. Office staff can stay on standard handsets on the same account, with one bill and one account manager.

Who needs a rugged phone or tablet?

A standard smartphone in a thin case rarely lasts long on site. Rugged devices make sense for people who work outdoors, in dust or wet weather, or wearing gloves, and for anyone whose phone is a tool rather than just a phone:

  • Construction and groundworks: site managers, foremen and engineers using drawings, RAMS, photos and site apps in all weathers
  • Renewable energy: solar, battery storage and wind installers and maintenance engineers working on roofs, in fields and at substations
  • Facilities, maintenance and utilities: mobile engineers who log jobs, take photos and capture signatures on the move
  • Venues, stadiums and events: stewards, grounds and operations staff who need a phone that copes with rain and knocks
  • Warehousing and logistics: staff scanning, picking and driving between sites

Most businesses end up with a mixed fleet: rugged devices for field teams and standard handsets for the office, all on one account.

What to look for in a rugged phone or tablet

"Rugged" isn't one standard, so check these points before you buy. We'll recommend devices from our range against them, based on how your teams work.

  • Dust and water protection: look for an IP68 rating (dust-tight and protected against immersion) for site and outdoor work
  • Drop protection: devices tested to the MIL-STD-810H military standard for drops, shock and vibration
  • A screen that works on site: readable in sunlight and usable with gloves or wet hands
  • Battery life: enough for a full shift, and a replaceable or hot-swappable battery on some models
  • Loud speakers and a programmable button: for calls in noisy places and one-press push-to-talk or lone worker alerts
  • Network support: 4G and 5G on the bands used by EE, O2 and Vodafone, plus dual SIM or eSIM if you mix networks
  • Management and updates: support for Microsoft Intune and a published security update period, so devices stay protected for the length of your contract

Choose the network by coverage at your sites

Rugged devices are only as good as the signal they're on. 4G from all mobile operators covers only 67% of Scotland's landmass (Ofcom, Connected Nations 2025), so the network that works best in Glasgow may be poor at a rural site or wind farm.

Before we recommend a network, we check coverage on EE, O2 and Vodafone at the places your teams actually work. If your sites are spread out, different teams can be on different networks under one account. Where there's no usable mobile signal, we can also provide 4G/5G, satellite and site connectivity.

How it works

  1. Tell us about your teams and sites: how many people, what they do, where they work and which apps they use
  2. Coverage check and device shortlist: we check EE, O2 and Vodafone at your sites and recommend rugged and standard devices to suit each role
  3. Set up before they arrive: phones and tablets are enrolled in Microsoft Intune with email, Teams and your apps, so a new starter can use theirs on day one
  4. Ongoing account management: out-of-bundle charges blocked, usage reviewed by your account manager, and quick swaps and reassignment when someone leaves, with company data removed first

Managed through Microsoft Intune

Every device we supply can be enrolled in Microsoft Intune. That means company apps and data are kept separate from personal use, updates are enforced, and a lost or stolen phone can be locked or wiped remotely. When someone leaves, their access goes with them.

If some staff use their own phones for work, Intune app protection can secure company data in Outlook and Teams without managing the whole device. More on keeping devices secure →

Rugged phones in construction: Kilmac

Kilmac is a Dundee civil engineering and groundworks contractor with more than 180 staff. We identified a rugged handset that stands up to site work, reviewed the firm's mobile spend at the same time, and moved its 155+ connections onto a shared data plan with weekly usage updates from our mobile team. Kilmac now says it has "a consistent, predictable plan with no surprises."

Buy outright or spread the cost

You can buy devices outright or spread the cost. Rugged devices cost more up front than standard phones but usually last longer on site, so leasing can make the monthly cost easier to plan. See hardware leasing and buyback →

Frequently asked questions

Are rugged phones worth the extra cost?

For people who work on site or outdoors, usually yes. A rugged phone costs more up front, but fewer broken screens and replacements, and less downtime for the person using it, often make it cheaper over the life of the contract. Office staff rarely need one, so most businesses mix rugged and standard devices.

Which mobile network is best for field teams in Scotland?

It depends on where your people work. Coverage in rural Scotland varies widely between EE, O2 and Vodafone, so we check coverage at your sites before recommending a network, and can put different teams on different networks under one account.

Can rugged devices run our site apps, Teams and Outlook?

Yes. Rugged phones and tablets run the same apps as standard devices, including Microsoft Teams, Outlook and most construction and field service apps. We set them up through Microsoft Intune before they arrive.

Do you supply rugged tablets as well as phones?

Yes. We supply a large range of rugged phones and tablets, alongside standard handsets from Apple, Samsung and others, all on one account.

Can we keep our existing numbers?

Yes. Your mobile numbers move across with you, so staff and customers keep using the same numbers.
