What is unified communications?

Unified communications (UC) brings business calls, video meetings, instant messaging, voicemail and presence (whether a colleague is free or busy) into one system that works the same way on a desk phone, a laptop and a mobile. Delivered from the cloud, it's often called UCaaS: unified communications as a service.

In practice, a customer can call your main number and reach the right person whether they're at their desk in Glasgow, working from home in Stirling or on a site in the Highlands, and that person can move the call into a video meeting or send a file without switching apps.

Our unified communications services

  • Cloud phone systems: 8x8, 3CX or Microsoft Teams Phone, with call flows, auto-attendants, call queues, recording and reporting designed with you
  • Microsoft Teams calling: make and take business calls in Teams, on your existing numbers
  • Mobile and desktop apps: your office number on your mobile and laptop, so you can work from anywhere
  • Contact centre, live chat, WhatsApp and SMS: handle customer calls and messages in one place
  • Business mobiles: EE, O2 and Vodafone contracts, managed through Microsoft Intune, on the same account as your phone system
  • Connectivity: business broadband, leased lines and 4G/5G backup, so calls stay clear
  • Business WiFi: reliable WiFi for offices, venues and sites, so calls and Teams work in every room

Which platform is right for you: 8x8, 3CX or Teams Phone?

There's no single right answer. 8x8 and Microsoft Teams Phone are full unified communications platforms, and 3CX adds video, live chat and WhatsApp to its phone system. If your staff already live in Microsoft 365, Teams Phone keeps everything in one app; if you need a contact centre, live chat or WhatsApp alongside your phones, 8x8 or 3CX may suit better. We'll recommend one after looking at how your business actually uses its phones.

Why one provider for phones, mobiles and connectivity?

When phones, mobiles, broadband and WiFi come from different suppliers, a call quality problem turns into a blame game. With unified communications from Indigo, one team looks after the phone system and the connections it runs on, with one point of contact and one bill.

Falkirk Football Club is a good example: we delivered IT support, stadium WiFi, connectivity and telephony, and the club now has one team looking after its phones and the connections they run on. Read the Falkirk FC case study →

The PSTN switch-off: 31 January 2027

Openreach is switching off the old copper phone network on 31 January 2027. Traditional landlines, ISDN lines and older phone systems, along with alarms, lift lines and card machines that depend on them, need to move to digital before then. Moving to unified communications now avoids a rush at the deadline.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between unified communications and a phone system?

A phone system handles calls. Unified communications adds video meetings, instant messaging, presence and mobile and desktop apps to it, so calls, meetings and messages all work in one place on any device.

Do you provide unified communications in Edinburgh, Stirling and Fife?

Yes. We support businesses across Scotland from our offices in Glasgow and Livingston, including Edinburgh and the Lothians, Stirling, Falkirk, Fife and Central Scotland. Cloud phone systems are set up and supported remotely, with site visits when needed.

Can we keep our existing phone numbers?

Yes. We port your existing numbers to the new system, so calls aren't interrupted and customers keep using the numbers they know.

Can we use Microsoft Teams as our phone system?

Yes. With Microsoft Teams Phone, staff make and take business calls in Teams on your existing numbers. We'll check whether Teams or another platform suits you better before you commit.

How long does it take to switch?

It depends on the number of users and sites, and on how long your numbers take to port. We plan the move with you so there's no gap in service, and staff are trained before go-live.
